Fox is starting a new dating-competition show, think “Bachelor”-style, titled “More to Love.” According to press releases, “More to Love” is to feature “curvy women,” and has called it a “dating show for the rest of us.” The bachelor will also have “a big waist and an even bigger heart” (producers describe him as a “Kevin James-type”).

“For six years, it’s been skinny-minis and good-looking bachelors, and that’s not what the dating world looks like,” Fox president of alternative Mike Darnell said.

And the most common answer is: “I worry that I’m too fat to date.” I’ll be honest: I’m not surprised. According to the Center for Disease Control, 69% of adults 20 years old and over are overweight and 35% are considered obese.

My weight has fluctuated dramatically throughout my life – I was a fat child, a thin teenager, a chubby sixth former, a skinny student and so on, up and down through my adult life.

I’ve never bought into the lie, popular with some elements of the media, that everything will be better when you’re thin.

The audience sees only the game; an important feature of all dating game shows is that the contestants have little or no previous knowledge of each other, and are exposed to each other only through the game, which may include viewing a photograph or at least knowing the basic criteria for participation (typically participants are not already married).

There have been a number of dating shows aired on television over the years, using a variety of formats and rules.
